Using a Memorial Service to Raise Funds

You can use the occasion of a memorial service to raise funds to help the bereaved family. Or if the person for whom the memorial service is being held was sick for a long time, and he lefty a hefty hospital bill, you can use the memorial service to raise funds to offset the same. We have also seen cases where memorial services are used to raise funds to finance causes (for instance, charitable causes) that were close to the heart of the person for whom the memorial service is being held.

Admittedly, the idea of using memorial services to raise funds can sound very strange to a person coming from certain parts of the world. But in the less well developed parts of the world, it is very common for memorial services to be used to raise funds. Even in the developed nations, where you have Diaspora communities from less developed nations, you often see this trend (of using memorial services to raise funds). Now if you have opted for this approach, of using a memorial service to raise funds, you need to:

  1. Make invitees know about the fund-raising aspect: this is better than ambushing people with the fund-raising aspect on the memorial service day. So, for instance, while printing cards inviting people to the memorial service, you need to make it clear that it will be a memorial service as well as a fundraising event.
  2. Invite a huge enough number of people: the objective here is to increase the odds of raising a reasonable amount of money. To get a huge enough number of attendees, you may decide to publicize the event through the media: local newspapers and radio stations for instance.
  3. Give people adequate time to prepare for the event: so the main objective here would be to allow people to get the funds that they would be donating during the memorial service fundraising event. Furthermore, if you tell people in good enough time, they can tweak their schedules to be in a position to attend the event. Like if, for instance, one of the invited people works for a company like Nordstrom, he would be in a position to visit the Nordstrom employees website in good time, to request for time off.  That would just be a question of him visiting the Nordstrom employees sign in page, logging in, and then navigating to the schedules section, to request for time off. If you don’t give adequate time to prepare, they may not be in a position to get the money to give during the memorial service fundraising event. They may actually not be in a position to attend altogether – if they don’t get enough time to tweak their schedules to accommodate the event.
